EMC Test Design, LLC has developed an RF Guard® Pro Safety Monitor, a small, “simple-to-use” RF field strength monitor for the general public that can also be used by tower technicians who frequently work in areas with RF radiation. It was designed for users who want to ensure their RF radiation safety without dealing with any complexity of typical RF safety instruments, according to Roman Litovsky, General Manager at EMC Test Design, LLC.
“Professionals may use the RF monitor, in addition to a primary professional field meter, as a backup instrument to be confident that they are not working in an area with dangerous levels of RF radiation,” Litovsky said. “The user can also explore their environment, locate and evaluate all strong RF sources, measure their average and peak power density, and mitigate potential harm.”
The RF Guard® Pro is designed to cover extremely broad frequency and power density ranges. It is a three-mode device, allowing the user to push a single button to measure the average, peak, or peak/hold power density of RF pulse signals from multiple sources.
“The RF Guard® Pro allows the user to detect and evaluate the presence of strong RF sources around — to provide peace of mind and ensure RF safety,” Litovsky said. “In case of elevated field strength levels, RF Guard® Pro will notify the user with an alarm sound and multicolor LED blinking.”
According to Litovsky, the RF Guard® Pro has a power density range from a high sensitivity of 0.1 uW/cm2 (the display 0.01% reading) to a maximum of 5 mW/cm2 (the display 500% reading), which is the RF occupational safety standard set by the FCC and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The display shows the averaged or peak power density level in percentages relative to 1 mW/cm2, the FCC/ICNIRP safety level for the general public (100%).
The frequency range of the RF Guard® Pro span is 30 MHz-60 GHz, which includes all the current 5G cellular bands and upcoming telecom bands yet to be allocated. It measures 3.7X1.9X0.6 inches and fits into a pocket or attaches to a belt or helmet with Velcro.
Low Power Usage, Long Battery Life
Because of the RF Guard® Pro’s “ultimate simplicity and advanced electronics design,” it operates at low power compared with other RF monitors, explains Litovsky. The instrument is powered by a small CR2032 coin battery, which allows the unit to have a display, loud alarm sound, and bright LED signal level indication for up to 2,000 hours or six months if used 8 hours daily.
“Reducing power use was a challenge,” Litovsky said. “We solved it with the state-of-the-art analog and digital electronics designed and optimized specifically for our application.”
Built on RF Safety
EMC Test Design, LLC, was formed in 1992 by a group of professionals with a background in RF, analog, and digital electronics and particular expertise in electromagnetic compatibility and RF safety. The company aimed to create RF field metering solutions by making RF isotropic probes and antennas from 100 KHz to 90 GHz. All its products have been invented, designed, and built in the U.S.
“Initially, we had one line of products for RF safety professionals, consisting of three RF probes with a single probe meter, called Smart Fieldmeter®. Our primary market at that time was EMC test and prequalification test labs,” Litovsky said.
Later, the scope of EMC Test Design products expanded to include a multifunctional, multiprobe meter, called Smart Fieldmeter® Digital, and a line of eleven isotropic RF probes for different professional applications. EMC Test Design, LLC invented and developed the unique patented RF isotropic antennas, the Omnifield Antenna® OFA-G/GH, which operates from 30 MHz to 6 GHz for selective RF field strength measurements in multi-signal environments. Such antennas operate with any spectrum analyzer and require no special software or accessories to measure the RF field’s RMS (average) strength.
EMC Test Design Advantage
To ensure accuracy, each RF Guard® Pro is individually calibrated at EMC Test Design’s calibration lab, which is traceable to the UK NPL (United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory). “RF Guard® Pro is not only a compact and convenient instrument, but it also has a very low price for a USA-built product, costing about 3-5 times less than any other professional instrument with such technical parameters,” says Litovsky.
After studying and evaluating its use, the largest cell tower company in Alaska in the USA bought more than a hundred units of RF Guard® Pro for its employees.
EMC Test Design, LLC has been designing RF field-strength meter devices for 32 years and continues to innovate. According to Litovsky, with the introduction of the RF Guard® Pro, the tower industry gets a tool that is simple to use, will stay on for many months at a time, and offers “excellent value” to customers to ensure the user’s RF safety at work and also provide RF awareness everywhere else.
